Feeling Art

Surface Exhibition Opens 5/28/22

Look! A chance for your eyes to feel what they see šŸ‘šŸ‘ And I’m so honored to be invitedšŸ™

ā€œSurface: Highlighting Texture & Patternsā€ art exhibition opens this weekend at the d’Art Center in Norfolk, VA May 28th – June 25th

I do try to attend the artist receptions held for exhibitions, particularly when I’m invited. It’s a chance to get even closer to the art. This one will be held on June 3rd.

I think it’s exciting to speak with the artists, the curators and gallerists to hear what they’re thinking. Added to what each artist is saying in their piece is fascinating. It enhances the interpretation of art and helps to gain a deeper insight into the work from multiple perspectives. But this exhibition is exceptional, because it literally feeds the eyes with the sense of touch, which adds an intriguing level to our senses and our shared discourse.

I’m humbled to have my work included. There’s a an awe felt, that settles into the archives of having lived. A flash of inspiration that others might see and think that they too can try. This is that reminder… it happens, that is dreams really can come true. Thank you d’Art Center Norfolk for inviting me. Truly appreciated šŸ™

This fabulous art exhibition opens in Virginia, tomorrow.

Art Supports

ā€œUs. When We 1st Metā€

Someone told me about a worthy cause where, 100% of profits raised go directly to local grassroots not for profit organization Safe Place for Youth (SPY).

And I immediately started making art to donate. How could I not?

So this is the completed piece 20ā€ x 24ā€

acrylic on canvas.

I wanted this piece to show us to us. When we first meet. We’re interesting, interested & nurturing. We easily get along. #heARTā™„ļø

Thank you šŸ™ Rachel Houk Seeger for sharing such an important cause with me. You are appreciated.

To those of you who have wanted to purchase one of my works, this is your chance. It’s also an awesome opportunity to help kids out. Plus, it’s tax deductible, so there’s that šŸ˜‰

Art Anxiety. Art Excitement.

Excitement! Anxiety. Excitement!

Preparing To Shipping My Art

I’m so honored to be invited to show my work. I believe I make art to share with the world by posting photos online, but recently I’ve received invitations by art galleries to show my art up-close and personal.

Even before I began making art, I always appreciated being near it, something transcendental happens when it’s viewed in person.

Go to galleries! See art. Especially contemporary art. Especially after this never-ending pandemic.

Someone told me that she only does first dates at art galleries, because it give her and her date something to immediately connect to and discuss. Sounds brilliant!

It also works with second dates, third dates and anniversaries. The point is, visit your local art gallery.

I’ve discovered that shipping my work is an emotional process. I worry that it won’t be well received, and No one will show up to view it. So while I might appear calm and collected, please believe me, I’m not. On the inside, I’m giddy and nervous.

With that being said, I’ll need a moment for myself to just be proud of my accomplishments thus far. No matter if my art sells or not, I’m making myself vulnerable and putting it out there. So, give me a couple of days to post locations and exhibition dates.

In the meanwhile, I want to say thank you for all the love and support here on IG. It’s truly appreciated šŸ™ā¤ļø

My Art Journal: Onward

Back in July of 2019, before my work was showing anywhere… I’d hang it outside in my backyard & sit with it.

ā€œThe Bean Eatersā€ and ā€œThe Letterā€

Back then, I didn’t have any expectations. I had already been told by a NYC gallerist that I was an Outsider, and that my art would never be in a showing.

I wasn’t offended. For me making art is part of my healing process, that is artists make art as much for themselves, as we do for others. So a stranger doesn’t get the power to dissuade us from our dreams.

I started hanging out with my art and my dreams started to come true🄰

This week, I accepted an invitation to show my art in St. Louis, MO, and another invitation in Cambridge and this Summer my artwork will be included at a fine art gallery in Texas!

Today, my art is showing in the ā€œArt as Salveā€exhibition curated by #AshleighCoren @newartcenter Corridor Gallery.

Another painting is on outdoor display @BillboardHope @orangebarrelmedia ā€˜s digital billboard at Washington and Boylston streets in downtown Boston.

Amazingly, just four days ago, another one of my paintings aired on the television show ā€œNaomiā€. Two months earlier, 13 of my paintings had been featured in a solo exhibition in the opening scenes of the Ava DuVernay show.

This past winter, one of my paintings won third place in ā€œA Perfect Momentā€ juried exhibition in Cape Cod, MA @culturalcenter.

Meanwhile, three other works were selected for the online ā€œCrop of Kismetā€ @ilikeyourworkpodcast Winter Exhibition curated by @willhutnick.

And my work was showing in-person at the ā€œSelf-Taught Geniusā€ exhibition at The Contemporary Gallery in Upper Michigan Peninsula, tribally owned and operated by the Lax Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians! Very exciting.

Hanging with my art ā€œGetting Her Hair Didā€
in the backyard

Last September, my work was included in ā€œForbidden Fruitā€ @ilikeyourworkpodcast Fall exhibition curated by @HilaryDoyle

And at the same time, my work was being featured in a solo billboard display @BillboardHope in Boston’s historic John Elliot Square.

A year earlier, almost to the day of being seated in my backyard hanging with my art, I was invited to my very first exhibition ROX/SE @PianoCraftGallery where I gratefully met the very kind and patient @erikgrau šŸ™

If it sounds like a lot to you, imagine what it’s been like for me and Ben! He’s been my wrap, bubble, ship, carry, drop off and pick up— ā€œRide to Rideā€ husband. I’m so grateful & love him šŸ™šŸ’•

So… guess what? Yup, there’s additional news coming, but I’ll hold onto it for now. It’ll give us something to look forward to, and isn’t that whole point for having tomorrows?

If you’ve read this all the way to the end, thank you! Thank you for coming on my virtual art journey with me. So kind of you.

You are appreciated šŸ™ā¤ļø

Seeing ā™„ļø Art

Showing at NNHS Creative Minds Event

We’re never too old to discover new ways of seeing the world around us šŸŒ

Case in point, it wasn’t until I completed an art crit class that I began to see words differently. For instance, I had never noticed the word inside the word — HeART šŸ’œ

Now, for sure, I had written and seen that word written down probably a million times or more (not to reveal my age, but yeah, a million times šŸ˜‰

Perhaps I had become too accustomed to seeing the icon, that is the image ā€œā™„ļøā€ has become a global substitute for the word and has somewhat diminished it.

But the truth is, up until very recently, I had never consciously acknowledged that the word ā€œartā€ was indeed inside the word ā€œheartā€.

It was about a week after the class, that I saw the word-inside the word and it caught my breath, so I paused to acknowledge & appreciate it.

Shout out to #NYCCritClub and all my awesome mates, for helping to open me up to feelings about art, so that I might see. Thank you for sharing your art with mešŸ™ā¤ļø

My Art Journey… Continued

Not so long ago, I began to share my art journey. Today, I thought I’d continue to share my foray into the art world, as it returned me to a state of hopefulness that my illness had taken away.

By the middle of 2019, I had begun to connect the dots in my life and soon, things that I hadn’t even thought to imagine, began to appear.

I was diligently painting four works at a time, using one paintbrush between the canvases, amusing myself to see how many strokes I could get before the paint dried, because I didn’t want to waste a drop of paint.

@New_TV Interview April 2022

Suddenly there weren’t enough walls in my house to hang all of the paintings. A fact that wasn’t wasted on my husband Ben, when we sold our home and had to lease a separate storage unit for my paintings.

By early 2020, I still wasn’t calling myself an artist. For me, that was a title reserved for people who made art all their lives, they attended art school and had a career in art. I did not. I was simply put, a techie and a writer.

A status that was confirmed by my presence on social media, where my handle was ā€œTechnygalā€ with posts and tweets about innovative technology and the impact it was having in the hyper-linked global community. I wrote a blog with supplemental articles and was earning income, gaining followers and recognition as a tech writer.

But then life happened, as it always does and inevitably, everything changes, regardless of whether we’re ready for it or not. For me, the change was significant, absolute and permanent. And I had to innovate how I would go about telling the stories that I could no longer write.

In 2019, I reluctantly changed my social media handles from Technygal to my name, DaNice D Marshall. It was a difficult first step, this letting go of my old self.

Some people live to eat, while others eat to live. There’s a balance and a purposefulness knowing the difference. For me, painting was like that, as I began painting to live, each brushstroke freed me from stress.

I started to share my art with the world via social media. I repurposed my blog, pivoting away from tech and started posting my paintings on Instagram and on Twitter.

I approached an art gallerist in New York, who upon hearing that I had no art training, told me my art would never be seen. My goals changed and his rejection fueled my trajectory. Here’s that timeline:

2020– Piano Craft Gallery, Boston exhibits ā€œBetty’s Lil’ Directorā€ and ā€œShe Named Her Daughter Hopeā€

2021– Billboard Hope selects my work ā€œFree Knowledge Must Bring Your Own Containerā€ for a solo billboard exhibition in Boston and and names me ā€œBreakout Artistā€.

2021 – Forbidden Fruit ā€œI Like Your Workā€exhibition curated by Hilary Doyle at Piano Craft Gallery, Boston. My work ā€œAmeryca’s Two Sonsā€ has a showing.

2021 – Crop of Kismet ā€œI Like Your Workā€ winter exhibition curated by Will Hutnick online exhibition. Three of my works are invited, ā€œShe’s Arriving Right On Timeā€, ā€œStorm’s Comingā€ and ā€œWinningā€

2021 – Self-Made Genius exhibition at The Contemporary at Northern Waters Gallery in Michigan. My work ā€œShe’s Arriving. Right On Timeā€ has a showing.

2021 – NY Crit Club, I apply for and am accepted into my first art critique class. It’s an amazing experience! I get to meet art teachers, gallerists and artists. They accept me without any art training! It’s here that I acknowledge that I am indeed, an artist.

2021 – Naomi. I’m approached by a art director for a new television show. She’s seen and likes my posts on Instagram and wants to use one of my paintings for a new television show. Later, that number is increased to fourteen.

2021 – A Perfect Moment. Cultural Center Cape Cod has a online exhibition and my painting ā€œWinningā€ actually wins third place and a cash prize šŸ™‚

2022- Naomi. S1 Episode 4- Enigma. Fourteen of my paintings were featured in the opening scenes of my solo exhibition on the television show Naomi. The titles of my work: ā€œA Cautionary Taleā€, ā€œBetty’s Lil’ Directorā€, ā€œMy Three Sonsā€, ā€œThe Empty Nestersā€, ā€œGetting Her Hair Didā€, ā€œHer Melting Potā€, ā€œAmeryca’s Two Sonsā€, ā€œDJ On & Onā€ , ā€œChess Movesā€, ā€œQueen in Rollersā€, ā€œThe Dreamerā€, ā€œThe Latter. Snail Mailā€, ā€œShe Pretends. Making Negative Spaces Into Positiveā€ and ā€œWhat She Thought She Heardā€.

2022- Art As Salve exhibition curated by Ashleigh Dior Coren at New Art Corridor Gallery. My work ā€œAmeryca’s Two Sonsā€ has a showing. This unique gallery is opened 24-7. So everyone can visit at any time.

2022 – Orange Barrel Media is showing my painting ā€œMoment Lostā€ on a digital billboard at Downtown Crossing in Boston.

ā€œMoments Lostā€ Currently on display, DownTown Crossing Washington Street, Boston.

Next month my painting ā€œShe Pretends. Making Negative Space Into Positiveā€ will be exhibited in the curated Negatives exhibition in St. Louis. Then in the summer, my work ā€œA Cautionary Taleā€ will be showing in the Hue exhibition at Msanii Hous in Carrollton, Texas.

I’ve been fortunate to have my work sell in Scotland, and here in the United States. Purchase inquiries of my showing works can be made via email: danicedmarshall@gmail.com

My Amazing Day

ā€œBe Amazingā€

Life is amazing. I know, because I have more life behind me than what’s up ahead. And I was just thinking, how when I was a kid the simplest things made me happy.

Like, if I woke up and the sun was out and shining. That made me happy, that was it. That was all I needed to have a good day.

And remember being in kindergarten class? That’s when we could be our best selves. Helpful, Compassionate, kind and caring…

But then we had to learn how to tie our shoes & everything got complicated. It literally tripped us up lol

But life is amazing. Be that. Be amazed again. Happy FriYah!!! šŸŽ‰

Thoughtful. Artful. Humbled

Me with my art on a digital billboard in Boston
(Orange Barrel Media)

My life has been quite a journey. I assure you, if anyone was silly enough to want to write a book about my life, there would be no need for fictionalization. It has been an amazing ride!

Of course, some of the names would have to be changed to protect the writer, but the drama and the excitement is all there, all that’s needed is salt and popcorn.

They say life has chapters, I agree. But I think some lives have sequels, because sometimes later in life, you’re so far removed from where you started out that it can’t just be a page turner, but rather it’s a whole new book. My life is like that.

I’ve even started to write a play about my life. I see it in my mind— I’m seated at a table, in a bare kitchen. The electricity has been shut off. A stack of bills on the table next to where I’ve laid my head, on my arms. Worn out from working and crying. One day has ended, another begins. And the early rays of the sun are coming in through the broken shade. It’s just a small bit of light, but where there’s been so much darkness, this small amount of light rouses me. It nudges me from my slumber, inspiring me and moving my spirit to get up. To try some more of life, encouraging me that maybe today I’ll live it better…

My art is also currently online in ā€œI Like Your Workā€ winter exhibition curated by Will Hutnick.

My art can also be seen up-close in the ā€œArt as Salveā€ exhibition curated by Ashleigh Coren at the New Art Corridor Gallery.

Next month my art will be n St. Louis and later in Texas.

I’m living proof that dreams really do come true. So keep going. Keep creating, keep making art, keep writing and keep dreaming. I am.

OnwardšŸ™
